Mythos:
The Gryphon is one of the oldest and most regal of legendary creatures. Images of Gryphons are known from the most ancient of ruins to the most modern sports teams. As a combination of the lion, king of beasts, and the eagle, king of birds, the gryphon inherits their regal standing, and yet it is far more powerful. Gryphons are said to be 10 times stronger than a single lion, capable of felling elephants on its own and carrying them back to its nest to feed. With their hard beaks, they dig up gold from the ground and use it to line their nests. Even when the old gods fell, and most legendary creatures lost their power, the gryphon was gratefully adopted into the new ways, seen as a symbol of chastity and divine duality and of course, a symbol of the power of kings.

Insight:
I wasn't a big fan of Gryphons (or Griffons) until I started researching them to write their Acheron Series mythos blurb. Turns out, they are pretty much the longest running mythical creature, spanning from Ancient Frickin' Egypt into the Renaissance, when people expected to find Gryphons in the unexplored wildernesses of the world, and even into the modern day if you include sport and business logos. After finishing my Gryphons, I visited a major art museum and took delight in spotting all the Gryphons across the different collections. I first tried coloring them so that they were all white(bird) above the belly and and all brown(lion) below, but this looked super weird, like they were wearing tights or something, so I eventually settled on the current coloration which is more like the standard animal counter-shading.
