Mythos:
Tengu are goblin-like creatures with bird-like features that inhabit high secluded mountain ranges. Tengu have little compassion for flightless humans, and will often treat them like animals. They might hunt down humans for sport or food, capture them to keep as pets, throw rocks or boulders at them from the sky, or use their Tengu magic to cause great gusts of wind from out of nowhere. However, some Tengu are not as bad, or at least more restrained, and have helped humans to master powerful martial arts and swordsmanship, or craft incredibly fine weapons and armor. Masters of flight, sorcery, warfare and craft, the mightest tengu can rival the gods in power.

Insight:
If you thought Tengu were just people with bird wings, nope, that's a modern depiction by lazy anime artists who can't draw bird faces. If you thought they were humanoids with red skin and big long noses, that's a different, more powerful kind of Tengu. Humanoid Tengu are called Daitengu (Greater Tengu) and they're so powerful that they are essentially gods. Bird-like Tengu are called Kotengu (Lesser Tengu) and though they are not gods, they are still wildly more powerful than humans and most other yokai. I think that the imagery of the more bird-like tengu has dropped out of use because modern artists are mostly not very good at making bird anthro characters. I've tried to make it a minor mission in life to get good at making bird characters so I don't have to avoid them.
