Mythos:
Unicorns were powerful creatures that possessed great natural magic. They live in far off wildernesses, and symbolize the purity of nature, untouched by human greed and destruction. However, the Unicorn is still a wild beast that could lash out violently against any attempt to hunt or capture them. It is said that only a maiden of pure heart, as pure as the Unicorn's, could lull the Unicorn's fearsome nature. The creature's horn is a substance known as alicorn, a powerful panacea that was said to cure all disease and neutralize all poisons. The healing power could also be used by the Unicorn while it lived, often on itself. A fatally injured Unicorn might still escape and recover from even the most grevious of wounds.

Insight:
I had a surprisingly difficult time coming up with alternate colors for the Unicorn. For most of these creatures I get ideas by looking at artwork of the creature or the closest animal, but Unicorns are almost always white, so that didn't help. Ultimately a lot of them came from real-life horses or My Little Pony. In researching for the mythos blurb, I learned that earlier depictions of the unicorn would sometimes make it a goat instead of a horse.
I don't usually like to debunk mythical creatures, but I am 100% certain that the myth of the Unicorn actually refers to real-life rhinoceroses, possibly to a species of rhino that is now extinct. Some Rhino species have gone extinct during human history, like the Chinese Rhino, which was hunted to extinction by people who wanted the healing powers in their horn. Sound like any mythical creatures you know? Nowadays, you would never get a rhino confused with horse, but keep in mind that the earliest depictions of Unicorns were pretty unclear on the details, and there were any zoos or coloring books for people to learn what a rhino actually looked like. "It's a great big 4 legged beast." "Oh, like a horse?" "Sure, close enough." There's a lesser known mythical creature called the Monoceros, which is almost definitely a rhinoceros and is sometimes considered a synonym for Unicorn. Tales of the Monoceros tend to play up the aggression levels rather than the healing powers.
